We Are Going On A Road Trip

Well what a big start to 2009 we are going to have. Mel and I are heading off on a massive road trip through the guts of Australia from Adelaide to Darwin. Going directly it is 3027kms. But we are heading out to Uluru and up to Kings Caynon which will add an extra 500kms+. We have hired a campervan from 6th Feb to 14th Feb 2009 to give us plenty of time to enjoy central Australia. Before we set off though we have the Big Day Out exactly one week before we leave... Oh and not forgetting Christmas and New Year... So the pair of us are working our butts off to make sure we have enough funds to get us through....

We are planning on updating this daily once we are on the road so everyone can enjoy the trip with us....Or more really for our own benefit so we remember what we've got up too....lol

So at this early stage (or not so early) we have just over 10 weeks to go. But surprisingly we are quite organised. We have a rough itinerary and plenty of ideas of what we don't want to miss. A couple of the things we want to do along the way include town tour of Coober Pedy, Uluru and The Olga's, King's Caynon, Alice Springs, Katherine Gorge...and when we get to Darwin, Crocosaurus Cove (if we are adventurous a cage of death dive, below), WWII tour, Jumping Crocodile cruise. We have 8 days in Darwin to explore and relax when we get there before heading home on the 22nd Feb.

We have booked accommodation in most places along the way and paid for as much as we can now too. This saves us carrying money around with us on the way. So first stop as we are leaving after work on a Friday is Port Augusta.... As I have just been there know it has nothing to offer. So that will just be a stop to eat and sleep for our first night on the road. I'm sure excitement will be running high and not much sleeping will be happening. Then early morning start to Coober Pedy... Hopefully we are able to do a tour that afternoon, but as it's quiet season they say they need a minimum of 6 people to leave. Fingers crossed. Another early night in Coober Pedy ready to set off in the morning to Uluru. Doing a sunrise tour there in the morning including the Olga's then in the afternoon head off to King's Canyon. I'm most excited about this stop. Bit of exploring and a canyon climb then off to the next exciting stop of Alice Springs.... We are stopping here for 2 nights. First night is going to be a big one at Bojangles.... careful they have live web cams... then next day is bumming around followed by an Aboriginal Cultural Show and Dinner. An early night is a must as we have the longest drive of the trip the next day to Daly Waters (if we get that far) stopping off at the Devils Marbles and anything else that takes our fancy along the way. From here it's off to Katherine, Checking out the Gorge and surrounds. Then off to Darwin on the Saturday morning. So much to fit in to such a small amount of time.

Darwin we are braving it and staying in a hostel. $160 for 7 nights what a bargain, but for that I'm giving up my own bathroom and sleeping in bunk beds... but I'm sure it'll be fine. Looks like a decent enough place. Melaleuca On Mitchell is where we are staying (picture below)

More to come, as we arrange more.....
